Had to, used to, would, should/shouldn't, could/couldn't, was/were?

Sam and Frances Bates used to live in London. She was a market analyst and he worked as a journalist. They (1)had to work very long hours and (2)couldn't spend much time with their three children. To relax, they (3)would get into the car at weekends and spent all the time they (4)were able to manage in the country. Then one day they decided that they(5) shouldn't go on living like that any more-they (6)should change their lives.

Sam found a cottage in Sussex, which the owner wanted to sell quite cheaply. They (7)could buy it without selling their house in London. But then it turned out that the cottage required massive repairs and they (8)had to sell their London house because they (9)couln't afford to pay for the repairs.

Now Frances grows and sells flowers and Sam writes DIY guides. They sometimes think that they (10)shouldn't have left London but they never really regret their decision. As Frances says, 'I think we (11)should have moved years ago. We wasted so much valuable time.'
