Childhood’s disease

Such symptoms, that can be a sign of a kind of disease, can appear already in the kindergarden or in the school. It is very needful to know the symptoms of the diseases, to be conscious of what disease is it, espiecally when it is your child, who suffers in it.

According to age :

- newborn’s diseases

- baby’s diseases

- infancy’s diseases

- school-age’s diseases

- teen’s diseases

The causes of the Childhood’s disease are different. Most of them are such physical and chemical causes like viruses in the environment, injurys, or the missing of vitamins wich cause deficiency disease. The less, but more serious are the genetic problems. And why are they more serious? Because genetic problems are not as curable as virus caused diseases.

The most common childhood’s diseases:

Chicken-pox:

The causative agent is the varicella-zooster virus. The infectious source is a man who is ill. The period of incubation is 14-21 days. The symptoms are usually the pimpled skin anywhere on the body. From the second day, there can be high temperature too. The illness is infectious since the day before the appearance of the symptoms, and it can spread easily. The illness can cause such serious intergrowth like inflammation of the lungs or intergrowth of the nervous system. The Chicken-pox can be prevented with an injection, and right after the recovery, your system is immune to this illness for a whole life.

Measles

This unpleasing illness causes ingrowth many times, but is rare nowadays, because children gets injection against it for years. The disease is the most infectous in the catarrh period, and spreads by droplet infection. The period of incubation is 10 days, then suddenly the temperature runs up to 40 degree. After this, there comes the catarrh period (caugh, tearfulling, cold) that lasts for 4 days. Right after 13 days of the infection, appears the Koplik specks on the mucous membrane. On the 14th day, the specks appear on the face, or on the limbs. Because of the illness, the child has lack of appetite. The pimple infests the body through 2-3 days, and it dissapears with the same time.

Childhood diseases

Symptoms that may be a sign of a disease may appear at kindergarden or early school age. It is useful to recognise the symptoms, to be conscious of what disease it may be, especially if it is your child who may have the condition.

Child development stages:

- newborn

- infant

- toddler

- pre-school

- school aged

- adolescent

The causes of childhood diseases vary. Diseases are often caused by the spread of bacteria or viruses, in droplets of saliva and mucus, especially when coughing or sneezing. Contagious diseases may also occur by coming in close personal contact with another infected person. Childhood diseases may also occur through physical, chemical and genetic causes.

Diseases can also happen when several variant genes interact with each other — or with the environment — to increase susceptibility to genetic diseases. Injuries, vitamin and mineral deficiencies may also play part in a child's health development.

The most common childhood diseases:

Chickenpox:

Chickenpox is a highly contagious disease caused by primary infection with varicella zoster virus (VZV). It usually starts with a vesicular skin rash mainly on the body and head rather than on the limbs. The rash develops into itchy, raw pockmarks, which mostly heal without scarring. On examination, the observer typically finds skin lesions at various stages of healing, and ulcers in the oral cavity and tonsil areas. The disease is most commonly observed in children.

Chickenpox is an airborne disease which spreads easily through coughing or sneezing by ill individuals or through direct contact with secretions from the rash. A person with chickenpox is infectious one to two days before the rash appears. They remain contagious until all lesions have crusted over (this takes approximately six days). Crusted lesions are not contagious. The infectious source is a person who carries the virus. The period of incubation is 14-21 days. The disease may cause serious side effects such as, inflammation of the lungs or of the nervous system. The disease may be prevented by immunisation, and right after recovery, the system is immune to this illness for a whole life.

Measles:

The disease is an infection of the respiratory system, immune system and skin caused by a virus. Symptoms usually develop 7–14 days (average 10–12) after exposure to an infected person and the initial symptoms usually include a high fever, often higher than 40 °C. Spots in the mouth usually appear 1–2 days prior to the rash and last 3–5 days, malaise, loss of appetite, hacking cough, runny nose and red eyes. The initial symptoms are followed by a spot-like rash, Koplik spots, that covers much of the body. The course of measles, provided there are no complications, such as bacterial infections, usually lasts about 7–10 days.

The most common diseases:

Diabetes:

Its’ classic symptoms are the following: thirsty feeling too often, the sudden growth of urine, weight loosing, itching of the skin, increased recovery time of wounds, feeling tired, exhausted too often, and blurring sight. It also has symptoms wich appear after a longer time. If you have diabetes for a while, your sight might fail, your kidney’s woking may stop, or you may have arteriosclerosis (illness of the vein).

Illnesses of the cardiovascular system:

The high blood pressure is one of the most common disease of the cardiovascular system. More dangerous are the pressure caused organ’s injurys, then the rate of the pressure. Usually there is no symptom of high blood pressure, but sometimes there is, that can be headache, vertigo, nose-bleed, pain in the chest, visual disturbance, hard breathe, stress.

The heart attack’s symptoms are well known, but it doesnt appear at everyone who suffers in it. Anyways, if you experience most of the symptoms of these, you should be aware of heart attack:

- feeling of a hard pressure in the middle of the chest, gripping pain of the chest, wich exists for a few minutes.

- heavy pain spreading from the chest to the shouders or sometimes to the head

- more and more pain in the chest

- nonstop pain above the stomach

- breathlessness

- sweating

- mortal fear

- coma

- sick

The stroke is the third most common death-causer in the developed countries. Its’

main symptoms appear suddenly, that is typical for the stroke:

Senselessness of the face, arm, leg in one part, problems with speech and phonation. Failing sight, double vision sometimes goes further, until blindness. Vertigo, unbalanced, moving problems. Hard headache, tenseness of the neck, painful feeling in the face, sickness, losing consciousness (however, this is a typical symptom of a special type of stroke).

Nowadays you can hear the most of the deadly illness called cancer. It has the most victims nowadays. Many people suffers in it in several countries, and Hungary has a specifically huge number of them. It is not easy to recognise by symtoms, because it can appear in many organs. Blood in the urine, or caughing up phlegm with blood may refer to cancer. Loosing weight, nonstop hard headache can also be a sign. Birth-marks may change size or colour , and bleed, that can be cancer. This illness appears at the middle age, about 40 but there are many children who suffers in cancer. It has many types, the most common are, the cancer of the blood, and the lung.

When we feel like we are ill, we go to the family doctor of our district. In the waiting room we usually have to wait so much. People can enter in the order of the arrive, it is kind of fair. After we tell our problems to the doctor, she/he usually checks our throat, our blood pressure, and listen our heart.

Most common diseases:

Diabetes:

The classic symptoms of untreated diabetes are weight loss, frequent urination, increased thirst and increased hunger. They usually develop much more slowly in type 2 diabetes.

Other signs and symptoms can mark the onset of diabetes. In addition to the known ones above, they include blurry vision, headache, fatigue, slow healing of cuts, and itchy skin. Prolonged high blood glucose may lead to vision changes.

The major long-term complications relate to damage to blood vessels.

The primary microvascular complications of diabetes include damage to the eyes, kidneys, and nerves.

Cardiovascular system diseases and disorders:

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a broad term for a range of diseases affecting the heart and blood vessels. A heart attack or stroke may be the first warning of an underlying disease.

High blood pressure is one of the most common disease of the cardiovascular system. When blood is pumping into the blood vessels with more force, this pressure may cause organ injuries. Blood pressure is measured in systolic pressure — the top number, or a diastolic pressure — the bottom number, in units of mmHg and usually produces no symptoms. This means most people don’t even realise they have it, although a few people with early-stage high blood pressure may have dull headaches, dizzy spells, nosebleeds, vertigo, pain in the chest, vision impairment and laboured breathing.

It is important to understand that warning signs can vary from person to person and they may not always be sudden or severe.

Although chest pain or discomfort is the most common symptom of a heart attack, some people will not experience chest pain at all, while others will experience only mild chest pain or discomfort.

More warning signs of a heart attack:

Discomfort or pain in jaw

discomfort, chocking or burning sensation in neck

Ache, pressure in shoulder(s)

Crushing sensation, pain in chest

Dull ache between shoulder blades

Numbness, tingling feeling in arm(s)

Nausea

Dizziness

Cold Sweat

Shortness of breath, difficulty breathing

If you experience the warning signs of a heart attack for 10 minutes, if they are severe or get progressively worse, call emergency services immediately.

The stroke is the third most common cause of death in developed countries. Its main symptoms appear suddenly.

Typical symptoms of a stroke:

Sudden numbness, tingling, weakness, or loss of movement in the face, arm, or leg, especially on only one side of the body. Sudden vision changes. Sudden trouble speaking. Sudden confusion. Sudden problems with walking or balance. Vomiting.

Uconsciousness (however, this is a typical symptom of a special type of stroke).

Cancer:

Today, cancer is the second leading deadly disease. In some countries cancer has overtaken heart disease as the biggest killer. Hungary also has an especially high number of fatalities caused by this type of disease.

Possible signs and symptoms include:

a new lump, abnormal bleeding, a prolonged cough, a cough with phlegm, unexplained weight loss and a change in bowel movements.

There are over 100 different known cancers that affect humans. The risk of cancer increases significantly with age.

Leukaemia (cancer of the blood) and brain tumors are most common in children less than 15 years of age.

Skin cancer:

Melanomas are the most aggressive. Signs include a mole that has changed in size, shape, color, has irregular edges, has more than one color, is itchy or bleeds.

When we feel ill, we go to the General practitioner (GP) in our district. Without an appointment usually there is a fairly long wait, as doctors attend to emergency cases. Patients may see the doctor in order of their arrival. This seems to be a fair system. After a short consultation with the doctor usually the throat, ears, eyes, blood pressure and heartbeat are checked.

When the doctor identifies illness through the examination, he may refer the patient for appropriate specialist care.
