But it's amply clear than in recent years the skies over Europe have become increasingly more crowded and more hazadous. The Hertfordshire incident was the second recorded close call in Britain in less than a week.

The growing concern over safesty is just one of the problems bedeviling air travel in Europe. Passengers now routinely find themeselves confronted by delayed flights, long check-in lines and all manner of strikes and work stoppages. In one sense, air travel has become a victim of its own success. Flying, once viewed as a luxury in Europe, is now a wildly popular form of mass.
