Born as Talia Rose Coppola on April 25, 1946 in Lake Success, New York as the youngest member of an Italian family, Shire was plunged from birth into an environment that encouraged achievements.She is best known for her roles in The Godfather (1972) and its sequels. Later she portrayed Adrian the girlfriend then wife of boxer Rocky Balboa (played by Sylvester Stallone) in the Rocky (1976, 1979, 1982, 1985, 1990) movies. Both of her parents are first-generation Italian-Americans. Her father, Carmine Coppola went to the Julliard School and was a flutist, conductor, and arranger.Her mother, Italia Pennino also went to Julliard School . Due to her father's musical career, Shire moved more than 22 times during her childhood. She has always said that she became an actress as a child in her bedroom. Then as she grew older, Shire began acting on the streets, going so far as to pretend that she had a terrible disease to entertain the old people at her Christian Science meetings.When she was 19 she went to the Yale School of Drama on a scholarship but dropped out in the middle of her second year choosing instead to head directly to Hollywood to see what the future held for her. She landed a few acting jobs, but nothing major. In 1969 Shire went to a party where she met a young composer named David Shire. The two married on March 29, 1970 and had one child together. In 1978 they divorced.In 1972 Shire received her first major acting part in The Godfather which was directed by her brother Francis Ford Coppola. Her father also appeared in two scenes of the movie as well as her mother. The film also starred legendary actors Robert De Niro, Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James can, Robert Duvall and Diane Keaton. In 1974 she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for The Godfather Part II. A year later, on September 18, Shire gave birth to Matthew Orlando Shire who suffered from a severe case of blood poisoning shortly after his birth. He survived.Within weeks of her son's recovery, Shire landed her role as Adrian in Rocky, a performance that won her the Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role. On August 23, 1980, Shire married Jack Schwartzman. The two remained together until his death on June 15, 1994. The couple had two children together. Shire and Schwartzman formed their own production company called TaliaFilm that produced movies like the 1983 James Bond movie, Never Say Never Again, starring Sean Connery as the illustrious Mr. Bond.Throughout the 1980s and 1990s Shire appeared in more than a dozen movies and on several television shows. She is will appear in the movies Homo Erectus and The Last Guy on Earth, both to be released in 2007. She is also in the process of filming the movies Looking for Palladin and the Blue Smoke a television movie based on a Nora Roberts novel. Shire is also an aunt to Nicholas Cage.
