The G36 is made largely of polymer, to keep it lightweight, and it has been suggested that the polymer receiver may be the cause of this issue. After the incident, the German Minister of Defence, Ursula von der Leyen, claimed that "The Heckler & Koch G36 has no future in the German army in its current state of construction."[5]

In May 2021, Steyr Arms introduced an upgrade for G36 rifles. According to Steyr, the components of this upgrade kit (metal receiver, and magazine well) can be replaced independently on existing G36 rifle without any modifications.[42] German media speculated this might be a relatively way to extend the service life of the G36 in the Bundeswehr. It was speculated, the repairing of the whole fleet would be high cost, expensive, so phasing out for another weapons would be the most budget friendly option, the HK 416, the licenced version of the U.S. M4 carbine is the new service rifle starting in 2022.
