6 = 6th generation Radeon graphics card

9 = The best performing cards (considered "premium performance") within the generation; a.k.a. it represents the performance tier.

90 = The top performing model within that performance tier.

HD x4xx = Lowest performance cards in the generation. Not really considered gaming cards

HD x5xx = Better performance, but still not really considered a gaming card.

HD x6xx = Value mainstream performance. Decent enough for non demanding games and no so high expectations.

HD x7xx = Gaming mainstream performance within the generation. Good for most demanding games as long as expectation are not too high.

HD x8xx = High end gaming performance. You will generally get very good performance even when the graphic settings are set to high or very high.

HD x9xx = Premium performance level. When you want the absolute best performance the generation can provide; assuming you can afford such a card.
