Whenever Alan and Barbara Kay go anywhere, they always take their pet Rani,with them. Rani's favourite place is the beach near Alan and Barbara's home and they often spend the day there together.That doesn't sound very unusual. A lot of people take their dogs to the beach. Rani,however isn't a dog. She's a cow- and Indian white cow, to be exact.

Rani has been with the Kays for about five years now.When she was born, she wasn't very strong.Everyone expected her to die, but Barbara looked after her and she survived.Later, she often came into our garden. She sometimes ate the flowers, but we didn't mind.When the farmer died, all the animals were sold.Alan and Barbara didn't want to see Rani go so the bought her, and she's lived with them ever since.She lives in a smaill hut near the back door, but they always eat together. In the summer, the Kays eat in the garden. At other times of the year they eat indoors, but they push the table up to the windows. Rani stands outside and puts her head through the window. She usually eats grass or hay, but she also likes salad and potatoes.When the weather is nice, the Kays usually go for a walk or they go to the pub. Rani alwaysgoes with them 'At first everybody looked at us' says alan, ' butnow if we go anywhere without her, people always ask, "Where's rani? Is she ill?" Everyone's very fond of her.

It's Friday evening, and Mark and Jackie Tresl have had their dinner. Now, they're watching TV, and thirteen-year-old Misha is watching the programme with them.It seems like a normal family scene. This is a very unusual family, however, beacause Misha is a horse.

Misha first arrived at the Tresls' farm when she was five months old. Since then, she's become part of the family. She spends most of her time in the house, and she sleeps in a porch that Mark built for her on the side of the house. Misha doesn't only watch tv with mark and jackie.She also eats with them (her favourite food is spaghetti), and she even helps with the housework. When Jackie washes up, Misha picks up the plates in her mouth and gives them to Jackie.

Misha's day starts at 7.20 in the morning, when she knocks on the kitchen door.Mark and Jackie get up and give her her breakfast and some lemondade. Then Misha goes out into the field. Every two days Jackie rides her for a fewhours. After that, Jackie gives her a shower and then she stays in the house till 11pm when she goes to sleep in her porch. The Tresls say that it's very easy to have a horse in the house, but there are some problems. Horses are heavy so they had to make the floor stronger. The have to vacuum the carpet every day, too,because of all the hair. Mark and Jackie don't mind these things, however. As Jackie says, 'She's a friend. She's part of the family.'
