During the Renaissance, a period in European history spanning roughly from the 14th to the 17th century, the word "secret" was used to denote recipes or formulas that were akin to trade secrets. These recipes covered anything from perfumes and hair oil to dyes and inks.

The male aphrodisiac, "morsels to excite Venus", comes from Jo Wheeler's beautifully illustrated book, Renaissance Secrets, Recipes and Formulas, a unique collection of secret recipes drawn from sources held in the National Art Library of the Victorian and Albert Museum in London.

Male Aphrodisiac, Secret Recipe

Food for love intended to increase libido varied in different historical periods. The name "aphrodisiac" comes from Aphrodite, ancient Greek goddess of love. Aphrodite was taken over by the Romans and was worshipped as Venus. Foods such as saffron, garlic, honey and sesame seeds, leeks, onions, nuts, rocket, oysters, aniseed, orchid bulbs (satyrion), pistachio nuts and skink flesh (type of lizard) were all considered aphrodisiacs.

The Roman goddess Venus morsels devised by Florentine apothecary, Stefano Rosselli, contain ingredients known for their aphrodisiac properties:

nuts, in particular, pistachio nuts "wondrous for stimulating sexual desire"; pine kernels, famous for "greatly increased sperm" and walnuts

rocket seeds, a powerful aphrodisiac

cloves, cinnamon and ginger

powdered bodies of skinks (a skink was a type of saltwater lizard), 4 are needed

coconut, or "India nut"

chickpeas, the red variety, an ingredient said to excite Roman goddess Venus

wild asparagus considered to be an aphrodisiac as well

ambergris, a substance found in the intestine of the sperm whale

diasatirion, the most powerful ingredient of all

Diasatirion, Male Aphrodisiac

The morsels of Venus were supposed to be a male aphrodisiac and the Renaissance apothecary also stocked a special rub to go with the biscuits. The most powerful ingredient of the morsels was diasatirion, a concoction that contained a cocktail of known aphrodisiacs. It was based on an orchid bulb, satyrion, and added ingredients included chickpeas, ginger, cinnamon and skinks.

Diasatirion also contained brain of sparrows. Sparrows were Aphrodite's sacred birds and are seen in mythology to pull Aphrodite's or Venus' chariot. Consequently sparrows brains were considered a potent aphrodisiac. 3 ounces of diasatirion are needed to make these love morsels.

According to Wheeler, a variant recipe contained also nuts, aniseed, rocket seeds and musk. The secret recipe was found in a Florentine manuscript dating from 1569-88. The Renaissance food for love was advertised as “Morsels to excite Venus. Proven many times and which increase sperm. They do not cause any harm”.

The Venus morsels recipe did well for the Renaissance apothecary who concocted it. The male aphrodisiac was reported to have sold "for a long time" with "great effects". Together with the combination of the special ingredients the Roman goddess Venus must have helped him as well.
