If I had to travel 40 miles away from my home I would consider the following means of transportation.
First of all, I would take the most popular mean of transportation into consideration which is in my neighborhood the railway. This carries mainly commuters; therefore it is sometimes very crowded, especially in the morning rush hours and in the afternoon, when the work time ends for most people. But, on the other hand, travelling by train is reliable and reasonably cheap (for me, because students are entitled to a significant price discount) and almost every location can be reached by it. The travelling time is satisfactory as well.
Another considerable mean of transportation could be the bus, which is also is fairly popular and economic, but travelling by it is not nearly as much fun as travelling by train. During a train trip you can admire the beautiful landscapes, while on a bus you are constantly in the crowded highway traffic. In addition to this, buses are less frequent.
I could travel by car, too. I mean hitchhiking, but there are many criminal stories about it, so I think it is a bit dangerous. Moreover, I do neither have driving license nor my own car, so this option has nearly zero chances for me.
In conclusion, if I had to choose, I would choose the train for its above mentioned advantages.
